Non-Verbal Speech Assignment Empty
PostSubject: Re: Non-Verbal Speech Assignment   Non-Verbal Speech Assignment EmptyTue Dec 05, 2017 10:56 am

One of the most frequently quoted statistics on nonverbal communication is that 93% of all daily communication is nonverbal.

Dr. Albert Mehrabian, author of Silent Messages, conducted several studies on nonverbal communication.

7% of any message is conveyed through words

38% through certain vocal elements

55% through nonverbal elements (facial expressions, gestures, posture, etc)

Subtracting the 7% for actual vocal content leaves one with the 93% statistic.

The inherent flaws of social scientific research methodology combined with the incredible dynamic nature of human behavior make this specific quantification close to impossible.

Nonverbal behavior is the most crucial aspect of communication.

The amount of communication that is nonverbal varies between 60 and 90% on a daily basis.

Understanding expressions that only appear on someone’s face for tenths of a second can mean a lot to those who know what to look for.

A fleeting change in someone’s face or body language can signal a lot of different emotions.

Microexpressions are unconscious, extremely quick, sometimes full-face expressions of an emotion. And sometimes they’re partial and very subtle expressions of emotion.

Most people don’t even see them. Some people do see them but they don’t know what they’re seeing. They see something that has changed on the face, but they don’t know exactly what is was that was changed.

Learning to read microexpressions and nonverbal behaviors in general can be very valuable for anyone whose job it is to understand other people’s true feelings, their thoughts, their motivations, their personalities or their intentions.

Facial expressions of emotion are universal in the sense that everybody around the world regardless of race, culture, nationality, sex, gender, etc., whatever the demographic variable is, we all show the same facial muscle expressions on our faces when we have the same emotions.

There are cultural differences and large individual differences in when people express emotions and how they express them when they feel the emotions.

Gestures are very different.

There are many different types of gestures and so the two types of gestures that we generally work with are called speech illustrators and emblems.

Speech illustrators are these gestures that accompany speech that when you see a person using their hands when they’re talking to illustrate a point; they’re like animation. They’re like how we use our voice. They’re functionally universal in the sense that everybody around the world uses hand gestures as speech illustrators.

Emblems is another type of gesture. These are generally culturally specific. These are gestures that refer to specific words or phrases.

These things are culture specific, so every culture, just as every culture has a verbal vocabulary – different verbal vocabulary – every culture creates a vocabulary of emblematic gestures that correspond to certain types of phrases that they think are important to have in a gesture.

Some gestures are beginning to be universally recognized around the world, like head nods for yes and head shakes for no.

With nonverbal behaviors, there’s some aspects of it that are very universal and some aspects of it that are culturally specific.

I. Introduction - With nonverbal behaviors, there’s some aspects of it that are very universal and some aspects of it that are culturally specific.

A. Attention Grabber: Nonverbal behavior is the most crucial aspect of communication.

B. Thesis Statement: One of the most frequently quoted statistics on nonverbal communication is that 93% of all daily communication is nonverbal.

---

II. Body - The amount of communication that is nonverbal varies between 60 and 90% on a daily basis.

A. First Supporting Idea (Topic Sentence): The inherent flaws of social scientific research methodology combined with the incredible dynamic nature of human behavior make this specific quantification close to impossible.

1. Some gestures are beginning to be universally recognized around the world, like head nods for yes and head shakes for no.

2. There are cultural differences and large individual differences in when people express emotions and how they express them when they feel the emotions.

3. Understanding expressions that only appear on someone’s face for tenths of a second can mean a lot to those who know what to look for.

B. Big Finish: With all of the present information about non-verbal communication, it is important to recognize it more often and perhaps to cease verbal communication at times in order to allow for the other senses and gestures that are done as non-verbal communication to be recognized more often; it may help with being able to communicate more properly universally.

I. Introduction - With nonverbal behaviors, there are universal aspects and some are culturally specific.

A. Attention Grabber: Nonverbal behavior is the most crucial aspect of communication.

B. Thesis Statement: One of the most frequent statistics on nonverbal communication is that 93% of all daily communication is nonverbal.

---

II. Body - The amount of communication that is nonverbal varies between 60 and 90% on a daily basis.

A. First Supporting Idea (Topic Sentence): The inherent flaws of social scientific research on the society and the versatile and adaptable nature of human behavior makes it difficult to accurately give it a distinct value without natural fluctuations.

1. Some gestures are universally recognized around the world, like head nods for yes and head shakes for no.

2. There are cultural and individual differences in when people express emotions and how they express them when they feel the emotions.

3. Facial expressions of emotion are universal in the sense that everybody around the world regardless of race, culture, nationality, sex, gender, etc., all show the same facial muscle expressions on our faces when we have the same or similar emotions.

B. Second Supporting Idea (Topic Sentence): Understanding expressions that only appear on a face for fractions of time can mean a lot to those who know the hints and signs of these fragments of expression.

1. Microexpressions are unconscious, extremely quick, sometimes full-face expressions of an emotion which are sometimes partial and very subtle expressions of emotion.

2. Most people don’t even see them when they occur whilst some people do see them but they don’t know what they’re seeing; they see something that has changed on the face, but they don’t know exactly what is was that was changed.

3. 7% of any message is conveyed through words, 38% through certain vocal elements and 55% through nonverbal elements (facial expressions, gestures, posture, etc).

C. Third Supporting Idea (Topic Sentence): Gestures are very different. There are many different types of gestures with two types of generals gestures are called speech illustrators and emblems.

1. Speech illustrators are gestures that accompany speech to illustrate a point, such as moving one's hands whilst speaking in an animated fashion, like how we use tone in the voice. They’re functionally universal in the sense that everybody around the world uses hand gestures as speech illustrators.

2. Other types of gestures are 'emblem gestures,' which are generally culturally specific. These are gestures that refer to specific words or phrases.

3. Every culture creates a vocabulary of emblematic gestures that correspond to certain types of phrases that they think are important to have in a gesture.

---

III. Conclusion - Learning to read microexpressions and other such nonverbal behaviors in general are both useful and important for anyone that needs to understand other people’s true feelings, their thoughts, their motivations, their personalities or their intentions.

A. Closing Statement (Restate Thesis; Summarize Your Main Points In Three To Four Sentences): One of the most frequent statistics on nonverbal communication is that 93% of all daily communication is nonverbal. Subtracting the 7% for actual vocal content leaves one with the 93% statistic.
