Color Variations (Homework)

Examine color variations around you, separate for their forms. Photograph a view out of your window, or in an interesting outdoor area near your home. It can include anything significant to you in your environment, say some architecture along with some nature, for example.

Open the image in Illustrator and sample 16 colors in the photos and paste into a grid of 1 inch squares.

Rearrange the squares into 2 or 3 rows, grouping similar colors or values based on your own criteria. How did you make these decisions? In what way are the colors of each row related? Explain in your reply.

Mount the results on an 8 x 8 inch Illustrator document, arranging the squares in a way to show the connections between those who you see as 'related'.

In Illustrator, use the 16 color squares you made previously to create 2 separate designs of 8 colors each, adjusting the area each color occupies.

Select what you consider the 'warm' colors, that is, they seem to contain more reddish, orangish, or yellowish hues, and move them to the right.

Take the remaining 8 colors and move them to the left. You should have 2 columns side-by-side.

Now do two 'free studies' in which the space each color takes up varies based on your choices. Stretch or compress the color shapes to that overall column height is the same, but the size of each color is a greater or lesser proportion of the space.
