Plenty of people were on the internet nowadays observing others a little more closely and personally than they should without actually forming a relationship. They were information parasites at this point, literally only going places to feed on information and then leave, or to not give anything back in return in general.
Parasitic as it was, this was life now, and in doing this, people ended up trying to take advantage of peoples' eyes. They were smart enough to realize that people could see them, but weren't quite smart enough to gauge their own values in comparison to some who did indeed happen to see them for whatever reason. With no comparisons or measurements made toward another person based on relationships, people were no longer aware of where they were in the universe, and that made them vain and haughty; blinded by light.
It also made them, their sins, weaknesses, insecurities, vulnerabilities, and all other imperfections and flaws way more apparent. And they flaunted them all day and night all over the place for anyone to just pick up and learn about and use however they wanted.
If that was what they wanted to do, then okay, but there were still people watching THEM and working beyond THEM, whether they knew or cared or not.
Maybe the people exploiting them secretly also didn't care. Since when have they ever, in all history of exploitation? One person tries to exploit someone below them, leaving their backs open for someone else to exploit them in their weakness, which they expose when pursuing such ventures.
Such is life.
