| Mycolei (Fungus)
Species of fungus, such as mushrooms and such. Though they resemble plants, they are more closely related to animals than they are plants, sharing qualities of both worlds.
They are known to communicate and reproduce through spores, as well as to defend themselves from other creatures. Their spores tend to be toxic, hallucinagenic, etc. They can use these spores to take over the very minds and wills of other creatures, and also parasitize them for their own reproduction, feasting upon their material makeup. They are predators of all things, especially nearby plants and dying animals. Many insects become the prey of these creatures, too.
Abundant worldwide, most fungi are inconspicuous because of the small size of their structures, and their cryptic lifestyles in soil, on dead matter, and as symbionts of plants, animals, or other fungi. They may become noticeable when fruiting, either as mushrooms or molds. Mycolei perform an essential role in the decomposition of organic matter and have fundamental roles in nutrient cycling and exchange. Though most are stationary, there are some that are able to move, making them the most dangerous of all.
Even so, they are valuable as alchemic resources because of their spores and chemical design, thus making them potent ingredients for potions and poisons.
These creatures work on a microscopic level, and are able to consume others on such a level as well. This is another dangerous trait that makes them hard to fight, as they consume from the very fibers of cells and matter. | |
